Chaiten is located on the mainland coast opposite the island of Chiloe, near the mouth of the river Yelcho. It has 3258 inhabitants and is located 204 km south of Puerto Montt.

History
It arose from the installation of three houses in 1933 and monthly since 1938 contact was made with the vessel known as Tenglo Ferro nave of a state enterprise. Its name means 'basket of water' and is derived from the word huilliche 'chain' and that is related to the heavy rains in the area and the topography of the site formation. Thus gradually was providing services to the town. In 1946 was installed radio and Military Works Service and began construction of a road to the river Yelcho. Back then there was only a street, John Todesco. There were more houses and from here was intended to supply Futaleufú and Palena. Today it is a port city that is the main administrative and commercial center of the sector
